Joy or Dread, the essential choice.

“To achieve something you must first expect it of yourself.” – Dr. Wayne Dyer

Joy or dread the choice is ours.

One of my favorite tools is from Dr. Wayne Dyer; Wayne teaches that each day as we wake we have an important opportunity to set the course for our day, before we even get out of bed we can say “Oh God, morning…” or “Oh, Good morning!”

Do you choose dread or joy each day as you wake?

As you are reborn into your life each day do you allow the circumstances to gently arouse you or do you shock yourself into a state of go-go-go, as typified by the use of an ‘Alarm’ to rouse you from sleep?

Consider allowing one of the numerous smart devices that proliferate our existence to wake you with some sort of pleasing tone or music; how might that alter the mental/emotional state with which you begin your day?

Allow yourself to become aware of your daily habit of thought. Is your habit to instantly begin a litany of complaints, dread, anger and lack or do you practice a daily habit of gratitude for another breath, another chance to express the unique nature that is yours alone to bring into this world?

As we become aware of our daily habits resist self-judgement, simply know that all habits are learned, trained and then ingrained; whatever your daily habits are they are not you, not the real you. Habits are simply a by-product of a learning process which everyone experiences growing up in a system that is determined to mold you into Its image.

Once you become aware of these habits you can begin to understand that if your habits do not please you and do not bring any measure of joy, positivity or grace into your life then you have the capability to change them; just as you learned and practiced them over time, time is your ally in altering them.

Think of all the shoes you’ve worn in your life; where are your old baby shoes? Do you even know? Most likely you do not because once they’ve outlived their usefulness they were discarded. Would you ever consider hunting them down and trying to fit your now grown feet back into them? Of course not! That would be ridiculous and impossible to boot.

Consider now if your thoughts are a good fit for the life you truly desire to live. If old habitual thoughts are not moving you in the direction of your dreams begin a daily practice of noting your first thoughts each day; perhaps writing them down in a journal each morning, 2-3 minutes is all that is required to benefit from this practice.

If you notice that your first thought each day is one of judgement or irritation or negativity allow yourself to simply become aware of this thought pattern and how it affects your mood, your energy and your choices each day.

Then choose another thought by utilizing a simple daily practice; there are many to choose from. I like to have my clients play with a few different practices to explore which ones serve them best. For example; try one week of morning affirmations, followed by a week of sitting practice, followed by a week of yoga flow to see which one(s) suit you best.

In this way we begin to consciously experience our thoughts each day and how these thoughts influence our choices and our destiny.

As you become more aware of your daily thoughts, begin to recognize the old limiting habits that no longer serve you, it becomes natural to discard them in favor of more expansive, loving thoughts that truly fit your vision of the life you desire.

There are many wonderful teachers, tools and practices to help you along the way; it is my joy to share some of these with you and encourage you to cultivate a daily practice, the benefits are exponential.
